今日のテーマは「電話で友人と話す」です。
パットと恭子が電話で会話を始めました。
二人の会話を聞いてみましょう。
電話で友人と話す
Kyoko: Hello, can I speak to Pat?
Pat : It’s me. Who is this?
Kyoko: Oh, hi Pat. It’s Kyoko. Where have you been? I’ve been trying to call you all week.
Pat: Hi, Kyoko. I’m sorry. I’ve been out of town for work and just got back now. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the messages. What’s up?
Kyoko: I wanted to invite you to my birthday party. But the party has just finished.
Pat: Oh that’s too bad. I’m sorry I missed it. Was it fun?
Kyoko: Yeah. But too bad you weren’t there.

can I speak to ～：電話で「～をお願いします」
Who is this?：電話で「どちら様ですか？」
Where have you been?：現在完了形で「どこにいたのですか？」
try to～：～しようとする
I’ve been out of town：現在完了形で「ずっと町から出ていた」
for work：「仕事で」
I haven’t had a chance：現在完了形で「ずっと機会がなかった」
What’s up?：「どうかしたの？」
invite：招待する
the party has just finished：現在完了形で「たった今終わったところです」
miss：（機会を）逃す

Kyoko: Hello, can I speak to Pat? (もしもし、パットをお願いします。)
Pat: It’s me. Who is this? (僕だよ。誰？)
Kyoko: Oh, hi Pat. It’s Kyoko. Where have you been? I’ve been trying to call you all week. (あら、パット。恭子よ。あなたどこへ行っていたの？１週間ずっとあなたに電話をかけていたのよ。)
Pat: Hi, Kyoko. I’m sorry. I’ve been out of town for work and just got back now. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the messages. What’s up? (やあ、恭子。ごめん。仕事で町を出ていて、たった今戻ったところなんだ。メッセージを聞く機会もなかったんだ。どうかしたの？)
Kyoko: I wanted to invite you to my birthday party. But the party has just finished. (私の誕生日会に招待したかったの。でも、たった今終わっちゃったの。)
Pat: Oh that’s too bad. I’m sorry I missed it. Was it fun? (ああ、それは悪かった。行けなくてごめん。楽しかった？)
Kyoko: Yeah. But too bad you weren’t there. (ええ。でも、あなたがいなかったからとてもいやだったわ。)
今回は「現在完了形」というものが何度か登場しました。
現在完了形は「have(has)＋動詞過去分詞」の形式にします。
「ある過去から今までずっと（継続）」「今は既にそのことが完了している（完了）」「そのことをしたことがある（経験）」の３種類があります。
現在完了形を覚えてしまうと、深みのある文章が作れます。
電話にかかってきた英語が苦手だと言う人は多いと思います。
電話の英語も、落ち着いてよく聞いてみると、案外聞き取れることが多いのです。
そして、こちらの言いたいことも、しっかり伝える、という気持ちが大切です。
サオリが自宅にいたときに、電話がかかってきました。
早速そのやりとりを覗いてみましょう。
電話にかかってきた
Saori is at home.
Her cell-phone rang.
Saori: Hello.
Kathy: Hi, Saori.
Saori: Hi, Kathy.
Kathy: What are you doing?
Saori: I’m sitting on my bed with my laptop computer.
Kathy: Are you busy now?
Saori: Yes. I’m doing my work.
Kathy: What are you working on?
Saori: I have to make out a report for tomorrow’s meeting.
Kathy: Can you chat?
Saori: For a minute.
Kathy: I’m having coffee with my friend Sara at the coffee shop.
Can you go to see a movie with us this weekend?
Saori: Let me see…
I’m sorry, but I can’t.
I have to finish another report by next Monday.
Kathy: When would be convenient to you?
Saori: I don’t know now.
But I’ll call you later.
