「回転寿司」を英語で説明できる?

日本の文化について話をする中で、必ずといっていいほど話題に上がるのが「寿司」です。回転寿司の手軽さや人気の秘密を、英語で説明してみましょう。

回転寿司は英語で「Conveyor belt Sushi」

回転寿司のことは、寿司がベルトコンベアーで運ばれている様子から Conveyor belt Sushi と表現されます。

他にも、寿司が回転している様子から Sushi-go-round と表現されることもあります。日本の文化が浸透している地域では「KAITEN SUSHI」といっても通じるでしょう。

回転寿司について説明をする際には「対面式の接客スタイルではなく、寿司が自動で流れてくる」という様子を説明してから、それを日本では「回転寿司」と呼ぶと伝えるとスムーズです。

回転寿司を説明する

You can pick any sushi from a conveyor belt and eat them.

ポイント

会話で出てきた単語や表現をおさらいしましょう。

I saw my friends. 友達と遊んだ

See my friend は、直訳すると「友達を見る」となりますが大人同士の「友達と遊ぶ」という意味を持ちます。

遊ぶという意味で Play を使うと幼児がおもちゃで遊ぶ様子がイメージされますので、大人同士の場合は See を使うと良いでしょう。

同じような意味の Hung out with friend はやや若者向けの表現ですが、See my friend は自然で、羽目を外し過ぎていない印象を与えます。

occasion は理由という意味を持つ単語です。何か特別なことでもあったの?と聞きたい時の定番フレーズです。

少し前、知り合いのアメリカ人が日本にやってきました。そのときに、どんな物が食べたいのかを聞いたところ、日本料理店に興味があると言われました。

そこで、繁華街にある有名な日本料理店へ行き、いろいろな料理を食べました。彼は、日本料理の食材や味付けに感動していました。食材や料理がどのように作られているのかを説明するのは、意外と大変なことに気付かされました。

さて、ヒロミがサリーと外食をすることになりました。早速彼女たちの会話を覗いてみましょう。

Hiromi and Sally are talking.

Hiromi: What do you want to eat for dinner?

Sally: I feel like eating Japanese food.

Hiromi: What kind of Japanese food do you like?

Sally: Actually, I don’t know about it very well.

Please tell me about a nice restaurant.

Hiromi: How about a sushi restaurant?

Sally: That’s a good idea.

Hiromi: How about a Kaiten-zushi restaurant?

Sally: What is that?

Hiromi: It’s a conveyor belt sushi bar.

Sally: Oh, I’ve seen that on TV.

Do we have to reserve?
