英語で盗難「警察での会話」

    実際に、わたしが経験したことですが、図書館へ行き、本を読んでいる間に、バッグの中に入っていたはずの財布がなくなっていたことがありました。

    そのとき私は、バッグを自分が座っていた椅子のすぐ隣に置いておきました。本を読むことに夢中になっていた私は、バッグのことなど余り気にせずにいました。

    さて、本を読み終わり、席を立ち、バッグを持とうとしたときに、やっと気付きました。

    バッグが開いていたのです。中身を確認したら、財布が無いのです。

    慌てた私は、すぐに警察へ行きました。でも、財布は戻りませんでした。

    日本にいてもこのようなことがあるのです。海外では、さらに注意しなければなりませんね。

    さて、サオリが海外で盗難にあいました。その時の様子を早速覗いてみましょう。

    ★会話★

    Saori is looking for her wallet in her bag.

    Saori mutters to herself.

    Saori: I should have put my wallet in my bag.It must have been stolen.

    I have to go to the police station.

    Saori goes to the police station right away.

    Policeman: What is the matter with you?

    Saori: My wallet was stolen.

    Policeman: Can you tell me about that in detail?

    Saori: I went to the shopping mall.

    And I went through the park near the mall.

    Then I wanted to buy a cup of coffee at the coffee shop.

    But I couldn’t find my wallet.

    I think my wallet was stolen at the shopping mall.

    Policeman: How much money was in it?

    Saori: Well, about 300 dollars.

    Policeman: All right.

    This is a report on the theft.

    Can you fill out this form?

    Saori: OK.

    Saori finishes filling out the form.

    Saori: Here you are.

    Policeman: We will call you when we find it.

    Saori: I hope so.

    ★ワンポイント★

    look for~:「~を探す」

    wallet:「財布」

    mutter to oneself:「ひとりつぶやく」

    should:「(可能性・期待を表して)~のはずである」should+have+過去分詞で「~したはずだ」と過去を表すことが出来る。

    put A in B:「BにAを入れる」

    must~:「~に違いない」must+have+過去分詞で「~したに違いない」と過去を表すことが出来る。

    be stolen:stolenはstole「盗む」の過去分詞。be stolenで受身形「盗まれる」

    police station:「警察署」

    right away:「すぐに」

    matter:「問題」「困ったこと」

    in detail:「詳しく」

    mall:「商店街」

    go through~:「~を通り抜ける」

    report on the theft:「盗難報告書」theftは「窃盗」「盗み」の意味。

    fill out:「書き込む」

    form:「書式」「書き込み用紙」

    Here you are.:人にものを渡すときに、「さあどうぞ」の意味。

    (サオリがカバンの中の財布を捜している。)

    Saori mutters to herself.

    (サオリがひとりつぶやく。)

    Saori: I should have put my wallet in my bag.

    (カバンの中に財布を入れたはずなのに。)

    It must have been stolen.

    (盗まれたに違いないわ。)

    I have to go to the police station.

    (警察署へ行かなくちゃ。)

    Saori goes to the police station right away.

    (サオリは、すぐに警察署へ行く。)

    Policeman: What is the matter with you?

    (どうされましたか?)

    Saori: My wallet was stolen.

    (財布を盗まれました。)

    Policeman: Can you tell me about that in detail?

    (そのことについて、詳しく教えてくれますか?)

    Saori: I went to the shopping mall.

    (私は、ショッピングモールへ行きました。)

    And I went through the park near the mall.

    (そして、その商店街の近くにある公園を通り抜けました。)

    Then I wanted to buy a cup of coffee at the coffee shop.

    (コーヒーショップでコーヒーを買いたかったのですが。)

    But I couldn’t find my wallet.

    (でも、財布が見つからなくて。)

    I think my wallet was stolen at the shopping mall.

    (ショッピングモールで財布を盗まれたのだと思います。)

    Policeman: How much money was in it?

    (財布にはいくら入っていたのですか?)

    Saori: Well, about 300 dollars.

    (ええと、300ドルくらいです。)

    Policeman: All right.(わかりました。)

    This is a report on the theft.

    (こちらは盗難証明書です。)

    Can you fill out this form?

    (ここに書き込んでもらえますか?)

    Saori: OK.(わかりました。)

    Saori finishes filling out the form.

    (サオリは書式への書き込みを終える。)

    Saori: Here you are.(はいどうぞ。)

    Policeman: We will call you when we find it.

    (財布を見つけたらあなたに電話をします。)

    Saori: I hope so.(それを期待しています。)

    Please call me a police!「私を警察と呼んで下さい!」

    海外旅行で、良くあるトラブルは、「盗難」です。日本にいるときは、それほど問題にならない「盗難」ですが、海外では、注意しすぎることはありません。盗難に遭ったら、あなたならどうしますか?もし、警察を呼んでほしいとき、どのように言いますか?ここで、笑い話をひとつ。ある人が盗難に遭い、このように言いました。

    ’”Please call me a police!” さあ、どうでしょうか。一見正しそうに感じませんか?

    これを直訳すると、「私を警察と呼んで下さい!」となります。さて、正しくは何というのでしょうか?さて、サリーが海外で旅行中にトラブルに遭いました。早速その会話を覗いてみましょう。

    ★会話★

    Sally shouts.

    Sally: Call the police!

    Man: What happened?

    Sally: I had my bag stolen.

    Man: Good Heavens!

        OK.I’ll call the police soon.

    The man calls the police.

    After a while, a police officer comes.

    Police: What’s the matter?

    Sally: My bag was stolen.

    Police: What kind of bag was it?

    Sally: It was a black-and-white striped bag.

    Police: How big was it?

    Sally: It was about like this.

    (Sally shows the size of her bag with her hands.)

    Police: I see.

    Sally: Can you find and bring it back to me?

    Police: We’ll do our best.

                But it’s very difficult to do it here.

    Sally: What?

              Please find it soon.

              There were money and also a cash card in it.

              What shall I do?

    Police: Calm down, please.

                We’ll call you if we find it.

    Sally: I expect that very much.

    ★ワンポイント★

    shout:「叫ぶ」「大声を出す」

    happen:「(何かが)起きる」

    have+目的語+過去分詞:「目的語を過去分詞の状態にする」

    stolen:steal(盗む)の過去分詞

    Good Heavens! : 「大変だ!」「まあ!」の慣用表現。

    after a while:「しばらくして」

    What’s the matter? :「どうかしましたか?」の慣用表現。

    What kind of~:「どのような~」

    striped:「縞模様の」

    How big:「どれくらいの大きさの」

    show:「示す」

    size:「大きさ」

    with her hands:「手で」

    I see.:「なるほど」「わかりました」の慣用表現。

    find:「見つける」

    bring A back to B:「AをBにもどす」

    it’s difficult to~:「~するのは難しい」

    What? :「え?!」と驚きを表す時に使う。

    also:「~もまた」

    calm down:「気持ちを落ち着ける」

    夜道を走る青と赤のライトを点灯するパトカー。

    ★和訳★

    Sally shouts.(サリーが叫ぶ。)

    Sally: Call the police!(警察を呼んで下さい!)

    Man: What happened?(どうしたんですか?)

    Sally: I had my bag stolen.(バッグを盗まれてしまいました。)

    Man: Good Heavens!(それは大変だ!)

              OK.I’ll call the police soon.

       (わかりました。私が、すぐに警察へ連絡しましょう。)

    Police: What’s the matter?(どうかされましたか?)

    Sally: My bag was stolen.(わたしのバッグが盗まれてしまったの。)

    Police: What kind of bag was it?(それは、どんなバッグですか?)

    Sally: It was a black-and-white striped bag.

       (黒と白のしま模様のバッグです。)

    Police: How big was it?(バッグの大きさはどのくらいですか?)

    Sally: It was about like this.(だいたいこのくらいかしら。)

    (Sally shows the size of her bag with her hands.)

    (サリーが手でバッグの大きさを示す。)

    Police: I see.(わかりました。)

    Sally: Can you find and bring it back to me?

       (バッグを見つけて私のところに戻せますか?)

    Police: We’ll do our best.(われわれは最善を尽くします。)

                But it’s very difficult to do it here.

       (でも、それはここではとても難しいことです。)

    Sally: What?(何ですって?)

              Please find it soon.(すぐに見つけて下さい。)

        There were money and also a cash card in it.

         (その中に、お金とそしてキャッシュカードも入っていたんです。)

              What shall I do?(どうしたらいいのかしら。)

    Police: Calm down, please.(落ち着いて下さい。)

                We’ll call you if we find it.

       (もし、バッグを見つけたらあなたに連絡をします。)

    Sally: I expect that very much.(とても期待しています。)
