While on a working holiday in New Zealand, I was employed by Madison Construction to work as a labourer on a construction work site. I learned the importance of listening and observing. As a learner to new skills, I understood the value of being a student. I understood the role of a learner as important to receiving and following instructions for foreign tasks. These skills helped me value principles of humility, patience, and diligence in the role of a learner.
ESL Designer Tutor for Washtenaw Literacy, Ypsilanti, Michigan.
While I was an ESL Designer Tutor, I tutored learners on an individual basis twice a week for two-hour sessions. I was responsible for designing lesson plans to increase English proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening and for recording the learner’s goals and progress. From this teaching experience, I realized the role of communication, patience, and empathy.
Lead Student Engineer of University of Michigan Unions, Ann Arbor, Michigan
As a Lead Student Engineer, I was responsible for directing a team of fifteen other students in performing daily maintenance checks for refrigeration and heating and cooling units in three different buildings. I also acted as a mediator between other managers and my team members to correct urgent requests and problems with the buildings. I learned the importance of a leadership role and professional performance as an example for others to follow. This role helped prepare me for skills in regards to leading, directing, and facilitating others.
