英会話を勉強する生徒へアドバイス

Being multi-cultural by birth, I sought to expand my horizons and chose a language and a country that was as different from my culture as possible. Throughout my college experience, I have been fortunate enough to not only be able to take classes in Japanese, which has always been a passion of mine, but also was able to travel to Japan. Not many are able to learn a language and then go to that country in order to use it. That is one of my main reasons for this application. I want to be able to take what I have been privileged enough to have and spread it to those that do not have that opportunity.
In order to better understand what is taught one has to implement said teachings into real life. For two winter sessions, I took classes in Japan with my Sensei. Being completely immersed in the country that I had only learned about through books was an experience that altered not only my education but also my goals for the future. In these two trips I visited a secluded Kochl Monk Temple, where I mediated for an hour, visited Kyoto’s famous Golden Temple, and at the end, the electronic city of the world Akihabara. While all of these trips left an imprint, my visit to Kurashiki, where I was able to sit in and help elementary students with their English captured a part of my heart that I was not aware yearned to be fulfilled. It was that trip that guided the current plans that I have now.
In addition of traveling to Japan and taking Japanese classes, I continued to expand my horizon and knowledge by being elected to be Fresno State’s Japanese Student Association (JSA) activities officer for a year. One of my main duties as Activities office was to ensure Japanese transfer students had week to week activities in order to become familiarized with American culture. Having been a transfer student, I knew how significant it is to provide transfer students with as much different aspects of the local culture as possible, while providing them with the friendly communication and some connection to their native language. In JSA, I also participated in Conversation Practice Partner (CPP) for 3 years. The purpose of CPP is to allow transfer students to practice their English in actual conversation with native English speakers. At the same time, I was able to practice my Japanese using completely different context from what I had used in Japan.
My previous experiences have given me the opportunity to gain the abilities I know will be beneficial to your program and also give the best education to those that require help in learning English, while still having the connection of their Native language as well. I am hoping this experience, if granted, will help me reach my continued goals in education, which is teaching in higher education levels in Japan. I wish to inspire and to leave a positive impact as far as the image of foreigners is concerned. While I get to become immersed in the local culture and customs, I also want to leave an impression of my customs and culture so as to bridge the gap between them.
I would like to thank you for the opportunity and look forward to hearing from you and embarking on this next step in my life, as well as being given the opportunity to broaden someone else’s horizon such as mine has been expanded these last couple of years.
