My name is Douglas Baum and I was born in raised in New York! I am 24 years old and really enjoy teaching!I am currently an ALT at Daito-Nishi Junior High School, Daito-Nishi Elementary School, and Daito- Higashi Elementary School in Kawagoe-shi, Saitama. I really enjoy my position as an ALT and I have a strong desire to continue teaching English in Japan. I especially love working with children at the elementary schools. I am open to teaching English from children to adults. My current contract with Heart English School will end on January 31st, 2015, and I am willing to begin a new contract with a different school immediately after my current contract finishes. I currently live in Kawagoe-shi, Saitama. ?
It all started when I was fourteen and my Japanese-American classmate, knowing I was a classic rock musician with a soft spot for international music, generously offered to lend me an album ? the legendary Japanese group X-Japan’s Blue Blood. After listening to the album in its entirety, I was astonished by the bands capability to fuse western rock with the uniqueness and beauty of Japanese vocal melodies. The more I learned about Japanese music, the more I found myself fascinated by everything Japanese. In college I began to take courses in Japanese language and quickly declared my major as Asian and Asian American Studies. ?
I earned the opportunity to study abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata-shi, Osaka for the spring 2013 semester. Although there were challenges, I adapted to the nuances of Japanese culture and had a truly rewarding experience. As someone who had always aspired to teach, I was fortunate to have a Japanese roommate who wanted to pursue English. I began to tutor him on a daily basis, assisting him with key components of the English language, including grammar, reading, and conversational skills. His confidence in taking the TOEFL exam had skyrocketed. After realizing I had a talent for teaching English, I offered assistance to any students living in my dormitory who wanted to improve their language skills. They found my efforts beneficial and I learned a lot about teaching from this tutoring experience. I believe that becoming an ALT is the optimal choice for a professional teaching experience, which would also assist me in reaching my goal of pursuing a Master’s Degree in education. ?
As someone who enjoys teaching others I have also offered free, private drumming lessons, including teaching a Japanese exchange student at my home university. I have been playing for most of my life, and have a versatile playing style which spans many genres; as an ALT or English instructor, I would have the chance to reach out to my students in extracurricular activities by teaching the drums. I have also developed a modest interest in taiko which I would love to pursue in Japan. In my current band, there is not a sole leader; rather, our group has a collaborative spirit and all members participate in the artistic process. Such ethics correlate well with the duties of English instructors, with lesson planning in particular. ?
At my longstanding job of seven years, our work atmosphere was upbeat with an emphasis on teamwork. I was a “team trainer,” a position which is responsible for training new employees. I found satisfaction in educating and motivating my fellow team members with a positive attitude. I was promoted to this position because of my exceptional communication skills, diligence, reliability, and punctuality, which I believe are crucial traits for any ALT or English instructor. I also interned at the Japan Center as Stony Brook University, where we linked Stony Brook and the local community by promoting education and research in Japanese studies. ?
I come from a unique family of a single mother and two younger sisters. I have been raised as a self-sufficient individual, which I have learned is an important quality for living abroad. By participating as an ALT or English teacher, I will improve my understanding of Japan’s fascinating culture and language, while at the same time providing the Japanese community a better understanding of American cultural and social characteristics. This can be achieved by celebrating American holidays, demonstrating the New York dialect, and by displaying American values including individuality and equality. Not only would I be confident in the success of sharing my cultural heritage among the Japanese, but with ALTs and English instructors of different cultures as well. If accepted into a new company, I would love to stay with the opportunity for as long as it provides. I believe that my passion for cultural exchange and teaching are ideal for the instructor position.
