?
High School Teacher Liverpool UK 1990- 2003... Teacher of English, /Social sciences… Secondary School UK
?My role was as a specialist English teacher is to make the learning experience enjoyable and to develop the skills of writing and an appreciation of literature among students. English Language and Literature was taught together in Upper School, combining theory and practice, and each is used to illuminate the other.
?From the outset, the four modes of language ? speaking, listening, reading and writing - have equal importance within the department. Students were encouraged to communicate effectively and to become enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers and writers. Theatre and cinema visits as well as a creative writing club provided insight into the use of English in the popular culture of today and of earlier years. Older students were able to take part in public speaking and debating events to develop their self-confidence, communication and presentation skills.
?Upper 3 students took part in a Sponsored Spell for the Wirral Ark Project for the Homeless each January and enter appropriate writing competitions.
?The main areas of the school curriculum covered:
?Speaking and listening
?Reading of non-literary and literary texts
?Writing skills
?Development of language
?I actively endeavored to use ICT and multimedia resources to enhance teaching and learning. Upper (years) students had four lessons of English each week, usually with the same teacher, where they were introduced to a wide selection of books. There were library lessons each term, to actively promote reading but also to show pupils how to use the libraries and information retrieval to its best advantage.
?In Lower and Upper 5 (years 10 ? 11), pupils were prepared for GCSE Key Stage 4. All pupils studied English to GCSE level and English Literature was a separate option. I taught four lessons for the two subjects taught each week. Students followed the AQA English Specification A syllabus with a coursework folder of original writing, Shakespeare, prose study, media and original writing assignments. Reading and writing skills are further assessed in the terminal examination.
?GCSE English Literature students studied a second Shakespeare play, 20th century drama, the novel and poetry ? and this is an excellent preparation for the further study of English Literature at A level.
?At AS level, English Language students learnt to investigate and understand the diversity of uses and contexts for spoken and written English in the modern world; they write for a wide variety of purposes and audiences. They analyzed English used in a variety of social contexts and produced a folder of original writing for different purposes and audiences.
?At A2 level, students used their knowledge of linguistic frameworks in an individual investigative research project. They extend ether writing and editorial skills. They examined how children acquire English and how the language has developed from its origins to the present day.
There were two groups, each taught by two teachers. Four double periods was allocated in the Upper Sixth Year, three double periods and a single period in the Lower Sixth.
At both GCSE and A level, there was a 100% pass rate for students taking English Language and English Literature examinations.
Students following A level English Literature were taught to combine a warm appreciation of literature with penetrating analytical skill, to pave the way for possible further study at university. Each group of students was taught by two teachers. Four double periods per week were allocated. Each teacher led two double periods with a group.
AQA Specification B was followed and study texts ranged from Chaucer to contemporary authors.
