Student Assistant, Hawai’i United College (August 2013-March 2014)
Hawai’i United College functions as a satellite institution for the Japan-based academic consortium, 浦和実業学園. My position entailed working alongside English instructors, similarly to an ALT, in classroom activities, but more often alone or with co-helpers in English education and cultural enrichment activities outside of the classroom. Among these activities were sight-seeing trips across the island of Hawai’i which were supplemented with lectures and presentations prepared by helpers. In addition to these responsibilities, I also performed occasional lectures and translation functions between English and Japanese.
Personal English Tutor, Self-Promoted (September 2012 ? May 2013)
During my time as an exchange student in Kobe I had a consistent schedule of one-on-one lessons with various cliental. I worked with young children, fellow Konan students, as well as housewives with personalized lessons, most often utilizing conversational tools to work off the text material my students were studying at the time.
Guitarist/Band Promoter, Streetlight Cadence (September 2011 ? May 2012)
For a year of my time as an undergraduate in Honolulu, I was a member of the band Streetlight Cadence during its infancy. Aside from being familiar with musical material for performances and rehearsals, each member had taken upon themselves the initiative to expand our repertoire and opportunities. With this I gained valuable experience in establishing contacts and negotiating the terms of potential gigs. The scope of stages performed upon includes fundraisers for universities and local government to the sidewalk in Waikiki.
Volunteer, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (May 2010 ? August 2010)
I spent a summer season volunteering at a nearby National Park, offering park interpretation services to visitors on a daily basis. The standard demands of this position required me to familiarize myself with the vicinity of the park and its notable sites and their historical and cultural significance. I also gave suggestions as to how people could efficiently spend their time in the park if they were day-visitors or assign camping and trail permits to those seeking a longer stay. This position exposed me to many visitors from all corners of the world, leading to a development in better communication skills.
Student Editor/Exam Proctor, Pacific University Learning Support Services (September 2008 ? May 2009)
In my first year of collegiate education, I worked in an office that addressed the challenges faced by students with learning disabilities. My tasks included editing texts (e.g. emboldening texts, removing excessive editorials or pictures in textbooks) to provide students with material suited to their learning style. Additionally, I acted as a proctor for students taking examinations under circumstances to accommodate their needs.
