Nice to meet you!
My name is Theo (テオ) and I am a university student at the University of Cambridge, on a one year exchange at Rikkyo University.
I think that learning language is a useful and enjoyable thing, so I am happy to help in any way possible to help you reach your goals. I prefer to work in the format of a conversation, paying keen attention to specific grammar points, but am always trying to improve my teaching methods for other styles.
I have experience teaching both conversational and academic Japanese, so should be able to help you within those spheres. As the student your needs come first so please be sure to tell me what you want to get out of learning English.
I love literature, music, and cinema of all different genress and styles, and I am also a casual fan of football, American football, and cricket. We could talk about some, all, or none of these things! I enjoy inter-cultural exchange so you can help me learn about Japan and I can teach you about life in England as well.
Hopefully we can get along with each other and I can help you improve your English. I look forward to seeing you soon!
From 2012/9-2015/5 I worked as a part time music technology teacher at Pegasus Theatre, Oxford. I worked with young people aged 9-19 to help them create music on a computer that would accompany a play. I had to work in a team with my two fellow co-workers to plan each lesson to make sure that each student got the most out of it. I also had to work closely with a student who had special educational needs and to cater my teaching style to his needs.
I spend the period 2016/6-2016/7 working as a conversational English teacher in Otsu, Shiga-ken. I had to lead conversation classes with students aged 19 and up. Tere were a variety of needs in the class so I had to tailor my classes accordingly. I wanted the classes to function as a free-flowing conversation, but I would stop to bring up salient grammar points when necessary. Teaching in Japan was a valuable experience and is certainly relevant to the position I am applying for.
In 2016/9 I worked as a teaching assistant for a summer program at my university, the University of Cambridge. 10 students from Rikkyo visited and I, along with 2 co-workers, helped them write an academic essay in English on the subject of world literature. During the program, we had to teach essay technique, research skills, and academic English. We were also required to use our Japanese on occasion to translate difficult passages of academic works. By the end of the program, the students had written two high livel 4000 word academic essays, which was very rewarding as I had seen the hard work they had put into it.
