I was born to missionary parents and raised in Japan, but as I am American, I was educated entirely in English from the time I was very small. Growing up in a predominantly English-speaking environment and attending international schools where over 95% of the students themselves were native English speakers, English became my first language.

I first developed a passion for teaching English in college, when I joined an all-native English speaking volunteer English conversation club which assisted students in Japanese universities with their English-Speaking Society (ESS) circles. I realized that the public school system in Japan puts Japanese people at a disadvantage in their English education, especially when it comes to pronunciation and conversation, and I wanted to help them overcome that disadvantage.

Get private English tutoring to help you prepare for these specific situations, or support your English-speaking ability if you are already in one of these situations and find using English a challenge.

I will work with you to plan out the specific vocabulary and phrases that will be most useful to you, and then help you to practice with a native speaker’s American English pronunciation.

I start with the student’s own learning materials if at all possible, so that they’ll get their money’s worth out of whatever textbooks etc., they have already purchased, then when I get to know what specific situations they need English for, I add or adapt English phrases/sentences for those specific situations, and depending on the student’s English level and needs, I may recommend additional learning materials. I greatly encourage students to write down phrases/sentences (in Japanese, if they don’t have time to write them in English) that they know they will be most likely to need to know how to say, and bring their notes to the lesson, so I can teach them English they will very likely use. Students taking notes during lessons is very important, so they can review what they learned whenever they have a spare moment for the rest of the week.

Over 20 years of experience teaching Conversational English, Business English and Travel English to students of all English levels, both one-on-one and in groups of up to 8 students at a time. I have taught both in person and online. In private/semi-private English lessons, I’m regularly in consultation with each client to combine textbook learning, conversation, pronunciation training and grammar for their respective English levels.

Over 10 years of experience as an American-English pronunciation coach. Also over 10 years of experience as an English proofreader and editing consultant for business and medical professionals, providing editing consultation for English in public announcement scripts, company product/service names and on company product labels.

In private one-on-one lessons, combining or adapting curricula to suit individual students’ needs, working with individual students to plan out the specific vocabulary and phrases that will be most useful to their own situations, as well as grammar and pronunciation coaching.

Another specialty is proofreading. I proofread anything, from students’ text/email correspondence to term papers, to medical research papers and reports. Depending on the subject material, I may need to ask the students many questions about what they mean by certain phrases/sentences, so students get a lot of speaking practice in those lessons as well.
