Hello!
In my lessons I try to focus on several key points besides just grammar and vocabulary. These are:
Cultural differences between Japan and the West: approaches to problems, thinking styles, etc
Personal interests: I teach doctors, research students, taxi drivers, OL's, basically anyone, if you have some specific hobby you want to focus on, learning English that is useful to that hobby, great! I would be happy to assist you with this
Topical Discussion: I tend to focus on using articles, and getting students to be able to express THEIR thoughts (not mine) in English.
My background: I am a 23 year old half Japanese-American. As far as my Japanese goes, I grew up in the USA, and have been living in Japan for around four years now. Although I am not fluent in Japanese I can regularly answer most questions my students give me in Japanese, I believe this is most useful for beginning students as sometimes it is simply not possible to conduct an entire lesson in English.
For advanced students, or anyone who requests it, we can conduct lessons entirely in English.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Alexander Watanabe
I have gained experience at my two teaching jobs (one at Gaba and another at a conversation cafe) and am looking for something that fits me better now that I am more confident in my teaching abilities.
At both of these positions I rated highly with students: at Gaba I had a total average of 4.75.
At the conversation cafe (where I have gained experience teaching group lessons) I have been made the primary teacher, covering 3 days a week, and I am the only teacher that is allowed to teach 3 consecutive lessons (1.5 hours each) due to my excellent performance.
The reason I am looking for private students on my own is thus: I enjoy seeing the same people every week, it is less stressful for me as an individual, and also better for the student! You are able to skip introductions and get down to learning, instead of telling a new person what your name is, where you're from, what your hobbies are, etc.
I have this with my current job at an eikaiwa in Iidabashi, however the class sizes there are very large (9 students) and I would prefer to teach private lessons, or small groups of friends (2-3 ideally).
Below you will find a bit of my educational background as well as work history:
