I graduated with an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Georgia. I majored in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language.

I have taught English for the past 15 years in Japan and America. I taught English at two ELS centers at colleges in St. Petersburgh, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia.

In Japan, I have taught at a variety of schools, including a business English Institute, a TOEFL Institute, Tohoku Foreign Language College, Fukushima High School, ALS Language School, and USA Academic Center (online school).

My 16 years of experience as a teacher of French and English has been done through and out of educational institution, with or without pre-established course of study to follow. I teach French and English to children and adults regardless of their education levels.

I lived in Japan for 2 years when I was in the Navy. I loved it and wanted to come back.

I start with the student’s own learning materials if at all possible, so that they’ll get their money’s worth out of whatever textbooks etc., they have already purchased, then when I get to know what specific situations they need English for, I add or adapt English phrases/sentences for those specific situations, and depending on the student’s English level and needs, I may recommend additional learning materials. I greatly encourage students to write down phrases/sentences (in Japanese, if they don’t have time to write them in English) that they know they will be most likely to need to know how to say, and bring their notes to the lesson, so I can teach them English they will very likely use. Students taking notes during lessons is very important, so they can review what they learned whenever they have a spare moment for the rest of the week.

Over 20 years of experience teaching Conversational English, Business English and Travel English to students of all English levels, both one-on-one and in groups of up to 8 students at a time. I have taught both in person and online. In private/semi-private English lessons, I’m regularly in consultation with each client to combine textbook learning, conversation, pronunciation training and grammar for their respective English levels.

PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS, PUBLICATIONS AND INTERESTS

I am a member of the Japan Association for Language Learning (JALT), Canadian Actors' Equity Association, and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Special interests include content-based language instruction and authentic materials development. I presented on the latter at the JALT '97 International Conference, and published on the same topic in The Language Teacher, September 1998 (V.22 no.9). I have edited several short works on kyudo (Japanese archery) and produced a trilingual Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Japan.

I fell in love with a Japanese girl. We are still happily married after 35 years! And I love my language.

I have 18 years of ESL & EFL teaching experience. I have taught adults & university students of all levels as well as other students of various age groups & staff of Major Companies in Japan for the last 10 years. I have worked as a Bank Mgr. of Customer service in the US. So, I teach any business topic.
I have a BA in Communications from Univ.of TX.as well as a Master's degree in Linguistics- by Correspondence from Regent University in VA,USA.

As an English teacher, I explain education policies by clearly outlining classroom rules, grading criteria, and curriculum goals to ensure students understand expectations and objectives. When introducing texts, I provide concise summaries, clarify challenging vocabulary, and connect themes to real-life experiences to enhance engagement. I also emphasize structured writing, critical thinking, and active participation through discussions and assignments, fostering both language proficiency and analytical skills.

I moved to Japan with my children because my husband works here as a software engineer, and I currently reside as a dependent. Back in Sri Lanka, I worked as an English teacher, and I wish to continue my career in the same field here in Japan. Teaching English has always been my passion. I deeply enjoy helping others improve their communication skills, interacting with people from diverse cultures, and fostering cross-cultural understanding. It is incredibly rewarding to see students progress and achieve their goals through learning English, and I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience and enthusiasm to this role in Japan.
